Detailed description

Portland Country Club is a Private 18 hole golf course located in Falmouth, Maine.

Founded as a private club by golf enthusiasts in 1895, the Portland Country Club today celebrates a deep tradition of member service and commitment to the game of golf. Originally known as the Portland Golf Club, the members spent the first twenty years on the grounds of Fort Preble, and then in Thornton Heights. Annual dues were $2.00. After acquiring the current Oceanside property in Falmouth Foreside, the new Clubhouse opened to members on December 10, 1914.

In 1921, the club sought out course architect Donald Ross to design the timeless 18-hole course members enjoy to this day. The stunningly beautiful course is nationally renowned, enjoyable to play, easily walked, and filled with Donald Ross characteristics such as risk/reward, deceiving greens, and a visionary integration with the natural surroundings.

From the back tees the course plays to 6,440 yards and a par-70. From the forward tees the course plays to a par-73 and measures 5,527 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 6, a par- that plays to 609 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 4, a par- that plays to 146 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 6, the 609 yard par- challenge is the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 14, a 183 yard par-3.

This course's fairways vary in width. The signature hole is #15, a 609-yard, par 5, which has a double dogleg fairway and requires an approach shot to an elevated green. This club was originally founded in 1895 and has been listed by the USGA as one of the first 100 clubs established in the U.S.
