Detailed description

Hampden Country Club, is a Public, 9 hole golf course located in Hampden, Maine

The Hampden Country Club Golf Course opened for play in 1967. The course was built in 1967 by Hamm Robbins a former dairy farmer. In 1970, the Gamble family (Elmer and Leroy) became owners and operators of the course.

The course has a short, open layout. Generous landing areas are tempered by small greens. Although relatively short, the Par 5's-the seventh and ninth holes (462, and 420 yards respectively)- are not forgone par opportunities. A large pine tree blocks your approach to a small sloping green on the seventh that is further guarded by a mound and two bunkers, and a small pond on the right. The ninth, too, has a small undulating, two-tiered green that is tucked close to the woods on the right and a huge bunker in the front left. Likewise, the pond shared with the seventh becomes a resting place for many balls.

Another nine holes (designed by Elmer Gamble) has been planned for many years. Originally planned for completion in the year 2000, but latest word is it may be finished by the summer of 2012. The original nine will be incorporated with the new holes and promises to be much tighter and will incorporate many more doglegs and trees.

Until we hear differently, we are still calling this a 9-hole course.
